Preparing for Surgery

Our care begins months before your surgery is scheduled—preparing and guiding you as you make changes to your diet and lifestyle that will ensure success before and after your surgery.

Before surgery

  • Start to keep daily food records. Honest and complete food records are necessary before surgery to ensure long-term dietary changes.
  • Start to take a multivitamin daily.
  • Test out high-protein liquid supplements to find one that you like for use after surgery.
  • Start to wean off sweets, desserts, regular sodas and all other sweetened beverages.
  • Start to wean off caffeinated and carbonated beverages and limit alcoholic beverages.
  • Gradually decrease your intake of fried foods and high-fat fast foods.
  • Start eating protein-rich foods at every meal and snack.
  • Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Pre-surgery shopping list
Below is a list of items that you may want to purchase before your surgery so that you are prepared when you arrive home from the hospital.

Equipment needed

  • Food diary
  • Pill crusher
  • Blender or food processor (to puree food)
  • Measuring cup set with 1/8 and 1/4 cups and tablespoons/teaspoons
  • Strainer
  • Food scale (suggested, not required)

Groceries needed

  • Dry protein powder
  • Chewable multivitamins
  • Calcium citrate supplements
  • Non-fat dry skim milk powder
  • Skim milk, 1% milk, soy milk, or fat-free or low-fat Lactaid milk (if lactose intolerant)
  • Decaffeinated coffee and/or tea
  • Non-carbonated, zero-calorie beverages (flavored water)
  • Bottled water (if preferred over tap water)
  • Sugar-free powdered drink mixes (Crystal Light)
  • Sugar substitute (Splenda, Equal, Sweet & Low, Stevia/Truvia)
  • Sugar-free Jell-O, pudding or ice popsicles
  • Fat-free, sugar-free pudding (can be made with skim milk)
  • Non-fat, no-sugar-added light yogurt, blended without fruit (Dannon Light & Fit)
  • Unsweetened 100% fruit juice or “light” juice
  • Clear broth or bouillon
  • Cream-based soups (made with allowed milk products and strained)
  • Dry hot cereal (plain oatmeal, farina, Cream of Wheat, grits)
