Bariatric surgery

More than one-third of all American adults are obese, according to statistics provided by the CDC. When left untreated, obesity can result in major, life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and more. If you’re like many people who are obese or overweight, you’ve probably tried a combination of diets, exercise programs, medications, weight-loss services, and other interventions without experiencing long-term success. However, bariatric surgery has been proven to help overweight individuals lose weight, become healthier, and keep the weight off long-term.

Weight-loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, helps individuals lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach or rerouting the digestive system so that they absorb fewer calories from the food they eat. Following surgery, patients can eat smaller portion sizes and still feel full and satisfied afterwards. For weight loss to be successful, patients must make a series of positive lifestyle changes that include eating healthier foods and exercising regularly. Depending on the type of weight-loss surgery performed, some patients may also be required to take vitamins and supplements on a daily basis to maintain their overall health and nutrition. The types of bariatric surgeries offered at CarePoint Health include sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve), gastric bypass, and adjustable gastric banding with the REALIZE Band or LAP-BAND.

Sleeve gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is a type of bariatric surgery that limits the amount of food you can eat in one sitting.

Gastric bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is a malabsorptive and restrictive type of weight-loss surgery in which a portion of the small intestine is "bypassed" to allow the bloodstream and intestinal tract to absorb fewer calories.

LAP-BAND

The LAP-BAND® System is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which an inflatable band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. The band will limit your stomach’s capacity and create a lasting feeling of fullness.

REALIZE Band

The REALIZE® Band is a strong, flexible silicone structure made entirely of safe biocompatible materials. With the REALIZE Band, weight loss occurs at a natural and healthy rate — ranging from 1 to 2 pounds per week.
